What “free” means
There are no registration or tuition fees at the Portuguese 42 campuses. You should still budget for housing, food, transport, childcare, health, equipment outside the campus, and hours that cannot be sold as paid work. Free tuition removes one barrier; it does not remove the need for time.
The offer
42 is a school and learning model, not a library of free videos.
Progress comes through projects, automated checks, peer evaluations, group work, and exams. There are no conventional lectures leading everyone through the same material.
This can provide more accountability and community than solo online learning. It also asks you to research, test, explain, and return after failure without waiting for a teacher to provide the next answer.
Entry
Free access does not mean automatic admission.
Applicants register, complete online tests, attend a check-in, and take part in the Piscine. The campuses say no coding background is required, but the process still tests participation inside the method.
Avoid any service that sells admission influence, leaked exercises, or a guaranteed result. Legitimate preparation focuses on public fundamentals and the life around an intensive month.
Budget
Calculate the cost of attendance before calling the decision free.
Write down rent, deposits, travel, meals, care, medication, internet, and the income you may give up. Then compare the Piscine month with the longer common-core period.
A realistic budget protects learning. Financial pressure can turn an open campus into a schedule of exhausted late sessions that is difficult to sustain.
Alternatives
A paid route can be cheaper if it fits your constraints better.
University, a bootcamp, vocational training, and structured online courses offer different mixes of teaching, credentials, pace, cost, and flexibility. The cheapest tuition is not always the lowest total cost.
Choose 42 for its project and peer model, not only because the price is zero. If you need regular instruction or a specific diploma, another route may create a clearer return.
Fit
The strongest candidate is not necessarily the one who already codes.
Useful traits include curiosity, precise questions, comfort with feedback, willingness to help without taking over, and the ability to create a repeatable week.
Prior programming can reduce early friction, but it cannot replace sleep, presence, collaboration, and ownership of the work.
