My honest verdict
42 gave me a durable way to approach unfamiliar technical problems and a community in which building and explanation mattered. It also asks learners to supply much of their own structure. The same feature can feel like freedom to one person and neglect to another.
Where the value is
You practise autonomy before a job requires it.
Software work rarely arrives as a complete lesson followed by an exercise. You enter an existing system, find incomplete information, talk to people with different context, test assumptions, and explain why a change is safe.
