42 Portugal / campus comparison

42 Lisboa or 42 Porto? Choose the life you can actually sustain.

42 Lisboa and 42 Porto share the same tuition-free, project-based network model. The useful differences are practical: where you can live, how you will travel, which campus dates you can attend, and whether your work, family, sleep, and budget fit the city.

The short answer

Choose Lisboa if its campus, transport, housing, and application calendar make regular attendance realistic. Choose Porto for the same reason. The network method is shared, so the better campus is usually the one where you can be present consistently rather than the one that sounds better in a generic ranking.

Shared foundation

The learning model is not the main difference.

Both campuses describe tuition-free access, no academic-background requirement, project-based work, peer evaluation, a four-week Piscine, and a common core. Both publish a minimum age of 18 and say prior programming experience is not required.

This means a comparison should not invent a winner based on the logo or curriculum headlines. The meaningful decision begins with local conditions.

Application

The sequence is similar; dates and places are local.

Lisboa and Porto currently publish the same broad path: registration, online logic and memory tests, a campus check-in, the Piscine, and entry to the common core for selected candidates.

Available dates, waiting lists, communications, and places can change independently. Register with the campus you intend to attend and treat its application platform as the current source.

Daily reality

A 24/7 campus does not create 24 hours in your day.

Open access gives flexibility, but the Piscine is still presented as a full-time commitment. During the common core, progress also depends on sustained project time and the availability of peers for reviews.

Map the actual commute, housing, meals, work shifts, caring responsibilities, and recovery. A campus that is theoretically flexible can be unworkable if the rest of your week is already full.

Credential and employment

A strong outcome headline is not the same as a degree.

Lisboa and Porto describe a completion certificate, not a Portuguese academic diploma. If you need a licenciatura, ECTS credits, postgraduate eligibility, public-sector recognition, or a qualification for a regulated employer, ask the relevant institution whether the 42 certificate meets that requirement before committing.

A July 2026 report on 198 students who completed the Portuguese common core in 2025 published a 95.8% employment rate, a median of 18 days to a first technology job, and 57.8% employed within 30 days. The study was produced by 42 Portugal and describes completers, not everyone who applied, entered a Piscine, or began the curriculum.

My boundary

My staff experience is in Lisboa, not Porto.

I was part of the founding IT & Pedagogy team at 42 Lisboa and worked across campus tooling, candidate workflows, access, onboarding, and the first Piscines. That gives me direct operational context for Lisboa.

I do not present that experience as authority over Porto. Porto-specific facts in this guide come from the current campus and 42 Network pages.

Decision rule

Pick the campus where participation survives a difficult month.

If both campuses are possible, compare a bad week rather than an ideal week. Where would you sleep, travel, eat, work, and recover when a project is not moving and an evaluation still needs to happen?

The answer is more useful than prestige. The method rewards presence, repeated attempts, and interaction with peers.

Common questions

42 Lisboa or 42 Porto? Choose the life you can actually sustain.

Is 42 Lisboa better than 42 Porto?

There is no defensible universal winner. Both share the network method. The stronger choice is the campus whose dates, city, costs, and daily participation fit your circumstances.

Can I apply to both campuses?

Application rules can change. Use each official platform and ask the campuses before maintaining parallel applications or changing campus.

Is the Piscine the same in Lisboa and Porto?

Both publish a four-week, project-based, peer-learning format. Dates, cohort conditions, local communication, and daily campus experience remain local.

Are both campuses free?

Both describe the programme as tuition-free. Housing, food, transport, childcare, and time away from paid work are not free.

Do both accept complete beginners?

Yes. Both state that prior programming experience is not required. The Piscine remains intensive and expects active learning.

Do Lisboa and Porto award a university degree?

Their current pages describe a completion certificate rather than an academic diploma. Check any degree, ECTS, postgraduate, immigration, public-sector, or regulated-employment requirement with the institution that will assess it.

Do the employment figures guarantee a job?

No. The 2026 figures describe 198 students who completed the common core in 2025 and come from a study produced by 42 Portugal. They do not measure everyone who entered the selection process.

Which city is cheaper for a 42 student?

Costs depend on housing, commute, personal support, and timing. Compare current listings and your own obligations rather than relying on a static city average.

Do I work for either campus now?

No. This is an independent guide. My direct staff experience is from the launch of 42 Lisboa; current campus decisions belong to the schools.
