Free 42 Piscine readiness guide

Prepare for 42 without putting the rest of your life on hold.

A practical guide to planning your schedule, sleep, responsibilities, mindset, and peer learning before the Piscine begins.

How to prepare realistically

Reduce first-week friction, then make room for the month.

You do not need to know how to program before you start. To reduce early friction, learn basic terminal navigation, try a text editor and public C fundamentals, and practise explaining what you attempted. The more consequential work is clearing your calendar, testing the journey, and protecting sleep, meals, and recovery.

Technical preparation · Public fundamentals only

Learn enough of the tools to make the first days less noisy.

You do not need to know how to program before the Piscine. If you want to reduce early friction, practise the public fundamentals below. The goal is familiarity, not rehearsing current or leaked Piscine work.

Terminal

Move between paths, create and inspect files, understand basic permissions, use redirection and pipes, and look up a command in its manual.

Editor

Create, save, search, and change a plain-text file without spending the session fighting the interface.

C basics

Recognise variables, conditions, loops, functions, arrays, pointers, and the vocabulary used to discuss memory.

Working habit

Compile often, read the first useful error, test a small case, and explain what you tried before asking for help.

This is preparation with public fundamentals. It does not include current projects, exam material, leaked exercises, or copied solutions.

First-hand 42 experience

I know the method as a student, developer, and founding campus team member.

I studied at 42 Paris, worked on the student intranet with the 42 Network development team inside the Paris Bocal, and joined the founding 42 Lisboa team across internal tools, onboarding, technical-pedagogical support, and the first Piscines.

This perspective is first-hand, but the offer is independent. 42 Lisboa remains the authority for dates, requirements, campus instructions, and selection.

Campus location

Test the journey before the month begins.

Make a real trip to the campus at the hours you expect to arrive and leave. Check the door-to-door time, the last transport home, and the cost of a backup when the normal plan fails.

The 42 method, in plain English

Why 42 feels different from a conventional school.

The model removes familiar gates — tuition, prior qualifications, and lecture-led classes — then gives students more responsibility: learn through projects, peers, repeated attempts, and a campus available at any hour.

Access without tuition

Students do not pay to use the curriculum or campus. Sponsors and donors fund 42 Lisboa’s open approach to technical education.

Your record is not the gate

Applicants aged 18 or over are not filtered by diplomas, grades, recommendations, or previous programming experience.

Peers are part of the classroom

There is no lecture-led route through the work. Students research, explain, review code, and solve problems with one another.

Projects replace passive lessons

Progress comes from making things work. Each project combines technical skills, judgment, and collaboration around a concrete problem.

Failure is built into progress

The curriculum advances in levels. A failed attempt becomes feedback: revise, try again, and show that the result can be reproduced.

Freedom comes with responsibility

The campus is available around the clock, so students decide when to work and manage their own pace, energy, and commitments.

What this is for

Your operating system matters more than an ambitious study list.

You do not need to know everything before you start. You do need a plan for ordinary life: when you will sleep, eat, travel, speak to people who depend on you, notice that frustration is taking over, and return the next day with enough attention to learn.

Preparing for the 42 Lisboa Piscine means making room for travel, meals, sleep, recovery, and the unexpected—not only coding hours.

Compare the options

Tutoring supports the person. The Piscine runs the selection.

Readiness tutoring helps you organise your month and respond to pressure. It never replaces the official peer-learning experience or influences selection.

Preparation areas

Prepare the parts of life that pressure exposes.

We start with the constraint most likely to make the month harder, then build a small routine you can actually follow.

01

Calendar and obligations

Map work, family, travel, appointments, money, and the commitments that cannot disappear. Decide what to pause, reduce, delegate, or communicate early.

02

Energy and recovery

Set a minimum sleep window, simplify food and transport, notice when attention has collapsed, and create a reset that does not depend on motivation.

03

Mindset under pressure

Work with comparison, uncertainty, failed attempts, and the fear of being behind. The goal is not constant confidence; it is returning to the next useful action.

04

Peer learning and feedback

Ask specific questions, explain what you tried, receive evaluation without turning it into a verdict on your ability, and contribute without giving away someone else’s learning.

Readiness guide

Turn vague worry into a decision you can make.

The most useful preparation leaves you with visible choices, not a perfect routine or a promise that the month will feel easy.

Practical preparation areas and the boundary for each one
Area Question to answer A useful plan Boundary
Time What must still happen during these four weeks? A calendar with protected campus, sleep, and travel blocks No claim that one schedule fits everyone
Energy What is the minimum that keeps you functional? Simple meals, water, sleep floor, and short resets No medical or mental-health treatment
Pressure What do you do after a bad day or failed attempt? A written recovery sequence and one next action No insider assessment criteria
Learning How will you ask for help without asking for the answer? A specific-question format and reflection habit No project, exam, or leaked solutions

How tutoring starts

Begin with the life you actually have.

  1. 01

    Map the real constraints

The free 30-minute call covers your calendar, obligations, energy, confidence, campus stage, and what currently feels hardest to organise.

  2. 02

    Leave with one concrete change

We choose the most useful priority and turn it into one action: a conversation, a commitment to reduce, a recovery rule, or a daily learning habit.

  3. 03

    Decide whether to continue

You can keep the plan and stop. If follow-up would help, we agree the objective, session duration, and price before booking; each session ends with a written next action.

Fit and boundaries

Personal support without pretending there is a shortcut.

A good fit

  • You need help making work, family, travel, sleep, or money fit around the Piscine.
  • You want practical support with pressure, comparison, setbacks, and keeping a routine.
  • You want a free first call or ongoing 1:1 tutoring before and during the Piscine.

Not part of the offer

  • Admission influence, referrals, or any promise of selection.
  • Solutions to current or leaked Piscine exercises.
  • Therapy, medical care, crisis support, or a substitute for 42’s peer-learning model.

42 Lisboa Piscine FAQ

The questions candidates keep asking.

These answers combine official campus facts with recurring themes from r/42_school. Community experience is anecdotal, and current campus instructions always take priority.

What is the 42 Lisboa Piscine?

The Piscine is 42 Lisboa’s intensive 26-day, on-campus selection and learning experience. Candidates work through projects, peer evaluations, and the school’s peer-learning method.

Do I need coding experience before the Piscine?

No. 42 Lisboa says previous programming experience is not required. Former Pisciners on Reddit repeatedly describe starting from zero; basic familiarity may reduce early friction, but it does not replace persistence, collaboration, or learning during the Piscine.

What should I study before the Piscine?

Keep the technical scope small: basic terminal navigation, one text editor, and introductory C concepts can reduce first-day friction. Spend at least as much time clearing obligations, planning sleep and meals, and deciding how you will respond when you feel behind.

How much should I prepare?

Prepare enough to recognise the tools, then stop. Several former Pisciners say extensive pre-study only creates a short head start, while clearing your calendar, arriving rested, and being available for the full experience can matter more.

What should I do when I get stuck?

Read the instructions again, reduce the problem to one observable failure, test a smaller case, and ask a peer a specific question. Explain what you tried and what you expected; peer conversations and evaluations are part of the learning method, not evidence that you are behind.

How should I manage stress and time?

Treat the month as a life-organisation problem, not only a coding challenge. Decide your non-negotiables, simplify meals and transport, protect a minimum sleep window, and plan a short daily reset. Avoid building your schedule around other people’s project numbers. This is practical preparation, not an official selection formula.

Is this official 42 Lisboa coaching?

No. I offer this session independently. It is unofficial and is not delivered, endorsed, or assessed by 42 Lisboa.

Will this improve my admission chances?

There is no admission promise or influence. The goal is narrower: help you form a realistic preparation routine and approach unfamiliar problems with more intention.

Should I use AI or copied solutions to get ahead?

Use tools only in ways that preserve your understanding. Former Pisciners repeatedly warn that copied code creates a gap you cannot explain or reproduce later. This session never provides, reproduces, or reviews current or leaked Piscine project or exam answers.

What happens in the 30-minute session?

The first call maps your real constraints: work, family, travel, sleep, money, confidence, and the way you react when learning becomes uncomfortable. You leave with a small operating plan and a recommendation on whether ongoing tutoring would help.

When can I book, and what does it cost?

You can apply while researching 42 Lisboa, after check-in, or with a confirmed Piscine date. The first remote 30-minute planning call is free. If we both think ongoing 1:1 tutoring would be useful, the format and price are agreed before anything continues.

Is ongoing Piscine tutoring available?

Yes. Ongoing sessions can focus on routines, accountability, energy, setbacks, peer communication, and adjusting your plan as the Piscine unfolds. They do not include current project solutions, exam answers, admissions advice, or private 42 material.

Do you also work with 42 Porto candidates?

Yes. The tutoring approach is available to 42 Porto candidates, with a separate Porto preparation page covering the Porto application sequence, full-time commitment, 24/7 campus access, weekly exams, and local planning.

I am introverted. Will peer learning be a problem?

Peer learning requires communication, not constant sociability. You can prepare a specific question, use written notes, ask one person rather than a whole group, and contribute through careful reviews. The important habit is making your reasoning visible and asking before isolation turns one problem into a lost day.

Do I need to speak Portuguese or English?

42 Lisboa brings together people with different first languages. In practice, you need a shared language with the peer you are working with and enough confidence to ask for clarification. Check current campus guidance directly if language affects your application or accessibility needs; this page does not set a language requirement.

Do I need to bring a laptop?

No. 42 Lisboa’s current FAQ says the Piscine uses the school’s computers and that a personal laptop is not required. Check the official page again before your session in case practical instructions change.

Is a Discovery Piscine the same experience?

No. The name “Discovery Piscine” is used by some 42 campuses for shorter introductory or themed programmes. The standard 42 Lisboa Piscine described on the official application page is the intensive four-week selection experience. Confirm the exact event with the organising campus.

Where do I confirm the next dates?

Use the official 42 Lisboa website and your candidate application account. Dates, capacity, and availability can change, so this page deliberately does not reproduce a schedule that could become stale.
