Independent operator guide / 42 Network
Opening a 42 campus starts with a partner—not a building.
42 Network publicly invites private entities to open a campus, but approval, commercial terms, brand use, and current requirements belong to the Network. This guide explains the operating questions behind that enquiry, using public partner examples and my experience on the founding 42 Lisboa team.

The short answer
To open a 42 campus, begin with 42 Network’s formal partnership route and a credible regional operator. The local project then needs durable governance, funding, premises, infrastructure, recruitment, candidate systems, campus operations, community support, and alignment with the shared selection and educational model. The public website does not publish a standard budget, delivery timetable, licence structure, or acceptance checklist, so those details must be confirmed directly with 42 Network.
Two different conversations
Keep partnership authority separate from launch advice.
A serious campus project needs both, but they are not interchangeable.
Ask 42 Network about becoming a partner.
Use this route for eligibility, territory, legal and financial requirements, Network terms, brand use, approval, and the current opening process.

Public partner models
There is no single visible operator template.
These official campus profiles show several ways a local coalition can form. They are examples—not proof that the same structure will be accepted for another project.
42 Kuala Lumpur
The Network profile describes a non-profit initiative involving the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, supported by education and innovation partners.
Multi-party institutional coalition42 Prague
The Prague campus is presented as a 42 member brought to the city by Škoda Auto, connecting the school to a regional industrial and technology agenda.
Company-led regional investment42 Antwerp
42 Antwerp’s Network profile says the campus is financed by a network of 15 sponsors and embedded inside a major media and technology environment.
Distributed private sponsorship42 Gyeongsan
The Gyeongsan profile describes an innovation academy established by government to develop software talent through the 42 educational system.
Government-backed talent programmeAuthority
The first conversation belongs to 42 Network.
The official partnership page says private entities can help in two ways: open a new campus, or sponsor and enter a commercial partnership with an existing one. If the goal is a new school, the official open-a-campus enquiry is the correct starting point.
This page cannot approve a partner, quote Network terms, authorise the 42 brand, or replace due diligence. Its role is to help a serious operator arrive at that conversation with a clearer regional case and a more realistic view of the work ahead.
Regional case
A campus needs a problem worth solving locally.
The public campus profiles repeatedly connect 42 projects to a regional talent shortage, access to technology education, economic inclusion, employer demand, or a wider innovation strategy. A proposal should therefore explain why this city or region needs a campus now—not merely why the method is attractive.
Useful evidence includes employer demand, underserved candidate groups, existing education gaps, realistic annual recruitment, transport and accessibility, partner commitment, and the local organisations that can support internships, jobs, events, mentoring, or student welfare.
Governance
The logo does not fund or operate the school.
Public Network profiles show different coalitions: foundations, government agencies, companies, universities, municipal bodies, and groups of sponsors. They are examples, not a published menu of approved structures. The local project still needs a legal operator, accountable leadership, a durable funding model, decision rights, and a plan for years of operation after launch attention disappears.
Before committing to a building, define who carries financial risk, who owns day-to-day operations, who can hire and remove leadership, how sponsors influence the project, and how the tuition-free promise survives a funding shock.
Campus system
Premises, technology, and access have to behave as one service.
Public campus profiles range from compact facilities such as 42 Wels, which lists more than 80 workstations, to much larger government-backed programmes. Those figures describe individual campuses; they do not establish a public Network minimum.
The operating design must connect secure physical access, reliable workstations, network capacity, identity and permissions, safety, accessibility, maintenance, incident response, food and recovery needs, community spaces, and the hours the local campus can genuinely support.
Candidate journey
The launch begins before the first Piscine starts.
A candidate experiences one continuous system: discovery, registration, online stages, communication, check-in, identity verification, Piscine allocation, campus access, peer evaluation, selection, onboarding, and support. Fragmented ownership becomes visible immediately when demand arrives.
On the founding 42 Lisboa team, I worked across campus tooling, candidate workflows, onboarding, permissions, technical-pedagogical support, and the first Piscines. The 42 Lisboa launch case study documents that scope and separates my responsibility from school-level outcomes.
Launch sequence
Treat opening day as a readiness gate, not the finish line.
A useful sequence is: confirm the official relationship; validate the regional case; establish governance and funding; design the campus operating model; integrate systems and permissions; recruit and train the team; test the candidate journey; run readiness exercises; then support the first Piscine and common-core intake.
The first live cohort will expose assumptions that documents cannot. Budget and staffing therefore need room for observation, fixes, communication, student support, and repeated operating cycles—not only launch production.
My boundary
I can explain launch operations. I cannot grant a 42 partnership.
I studied at 42 Paris, worked on the 42 Network student intranet with the development team inside the Paris Bocal, and joined the founding 42 Lisboa team. That gives me practical context across the student, Network product, and local campus layers.
I am independent and do not represent 42 Network today. I can help an approved or exploratory team examine technical architecture, operational dependencies, candidate journeys, permissions, launch readiness, and delivery risk. Formal partnership decisions and current Network requirements must go through 42 directly.

What the public pages do not answer
Do not turn missing information into assumptions.
The formal enquiry exists because the consequential terms are not a public checklist.
- 01
The public open-a-campus page does not state a standard launch budget or required financial reserve.
- 02
It does not publish a standard project duration, contracting sequence, or guaranteed opening date.
- 03
It does not expose licence, brand, platform, support, or other commercial terms.
- 04
Public campus workstation counts vary and should not be treated as a universal minimum.
- 05
Partner approval, territory, governance, staffing, facilities, and readiness requirements may change and must be confirmed directly.

Common questions
Opening a 42 campus starts with a partner—not a building.
Can any company open a 42 campus?
42 Network’s public partnership page invites private entities to enquire about opening a campus. That invitation is not automatic approval. The Network decides whether a proposed operator, region, structure, and plan meet its current requirements.
How much does it cost to open a 42 campus?
42 Network does not publish a standard launch budget on its public open-a-campus page. Premises, equipment, staff, security, systems, recruitment, student support, operating runway, Network terms, and local regulation all affect the real figure.
How long does opening a campus take?
There is no public standard timetable or guaranteed opening schedule. Partnership review, fundraising, legal setup, premises, fit-out, hiring, systems, recruitment, and launch validation create a sequence that must be scoped with 42 Network.
Does the local operator have to be a non-profit?
42 Network describes itself as a non-profit and presents tuition-free access as a core value. Public campus profiles show several operator and funding coalitions, but the acceptable local legal structure and contractual model must be confirmed directly with the Network.
What is shared across the Network?
42 says partner campuses follow a common charter, shared values, the same selection process, and a common core of fundamental knowledge. Current implementation, systems, training, and contractual requirements should be verified during the partnership process.
What remains local?
Governance, funding, premises, staffing, recruitment capacity, local communications, welfare, regulatory compliance, employer relationships, and daily campus operations all require local ownership, even when they must remain compatible with the Network.
Can David Dacruz approve or introduce a 42 partnership?
No. David is independent and does not represent 42 Network. Formal enquiries should use 42 Network’s official open-a-campus route.
What can David help a prospective operator with?
David can help examine technical architecture, candidate and staff workflows, access and permissions, operating dependencies, launch readiness, delivery risk, and the connection between Network systems and local campus operations. Any engagement would remain separate from 42’s approval process.
